    Multifunctional Agriculture: A New Paradigm of Mixed Cropping

    The dominant agricultural paradigm in prime cropland areas of the American Midwest are farms producing corn and soybeans. Within this region, some states in the Mississippi River Basin have developed nutrient loss reduction strategies aimed at decreasing nutrient loading in rivers that contributes to the hypoxic “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico. While several conventional conservation practices applied to corn-soybean fields can reduce nutrient loss, converting annual crop acreage to perennial biomass crops would be far more effective. Sangamon River Watershed

The Sangamon River has its headwaters in McLean County, near Ellsworth, and flows roughly 238 miles until it reaches the Illinois River at Beardstown. The upper portion of the Sangamon River, upstream of Mosquito Creek is roughly 131 miles long and has a drainage area of 1,150 square miles. The lower Sangamon River, is roughly 107 miles long and includes the confluence of the two primary tributaries to the Sangamon River, Salt Creek and the South Fork.
